INTERNET USE POLICY
Big Bend Village Library W230 N9185 Nevins Street Big Bend, WI 53103 (262)-662-3571
The Big Bend Village Library provides free local internet access for library patrons as a way to enhance services and information that are not available in print sources. This is consistent with its mission of providing easy and open access to information for all segments of the community.
The Internet as a global electronic network enables individuals to search for ideas and information beyond the confines of the Library collection.
Currently the Internet is an unregulated medium. It provides wealth of information including some that may be erroneous, out-of-date, illegal, or offensive. The Big Bend Village Library has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and accepts no responsibility for materials that may be potentially offensive to adults or minors.
Parents or guardians, not the Library or its staff, are responsible for the information accessed by their children even if the minor (a child under 18) is unaccompanied. If a parent or guardian does not wish their child to have Internet access, they may ask the Library to note the restriction in the patron record.
Library staff has the right to monitor Internet workstations to ensure compliance with our policies.
Examples of unacceptable use include, but are not limited to the following:
* The intentional creation or spread of a computer virus * Making any changes to the setup of configuration of any software or hardware * Destruction of or damage to equipment or software * Making unauthorized copies of copyrighted or licensed materials * Invading the privacy of others or engaging in any activity that is harassing or defamatory * Use of the system for illegal or criminal purposes * Users are obligated to abide by Wisconsin State Statues 944.21 and 948.11 and Federal Laws regarding the transmission or viewing of sexually explicit, threatening, obscene, or materials deemed “harmful to children as illegal * Entering “chat rooms” to explore or communicate
LOSS OF BIG BEND VILLAGE LIBRARY PRIVILEGES
Any library user who engages in any unacceptable acts may lose their Internet access or library privileges from one week to complete expulsion and will be reported to local law enforcement authorities.
Parents of youth will be immediately notified and involved in the process.
Users may use the Internet or the receipt and transmission of electronic mail as long as they use a free-mail service such as yahoo, Hotmail, etc. In order to minimize the spread of viruses to the Big Bend Village Library and of preserving disk space, downloading of files from the Internet to the Library’s hard drive will not be allowed.
A current library card is required before a patron will be allowed to sign the permission and release form for Internet access. A parent or guardian of internet users under the age of 18 must be present to sign a release form and assume responsibility for that patron.
Library staff may be available to assist new users, answer questions and offer search suggestions. However, they do not have time to provide in-depth instruction.
Computers are available during open hours on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a time limit of 30 minutes per workstation. If no one is waiting to use the computers, a patron may continue to use the computer until another patron wishes to do so. Printing will be 15 cents per page with 30 cents for two-sided items. Color printing is 25 cents per page.
Note: The Big Bend Village Library Board will periodically review policies.
